I've got a 1.3 mkii golf 1991 (carb), done about 130k. Every morning i go start it fine (as long as i put my foot on the gas whilst i do it) but it doesn't idle! It stalls almost every time i take my foot off the gas, the revs just drop! when i see it dropping i can save it by giving it some revs but its a nightmare every time i stop! After about 10 mins when the engines warmed up its fine but until then i have to sit with my foot slightly on the gas to stop it stalling! Also when i pull away in first my revs dip quite significantly before going up again. Not sure if they're related.
Suggestions much appreciated!

hows your spark plugs look also change hte fuel filter also i think you may have a inline fuel filter in the carbuerator. it may needs to be adjusted for a richer mixture.

is the choke operating properly?
