2002 Other Volkswagen Models Two Wheel Drive Manual 184000 miles

i own an south african manufacture vw microbus 2.3i 5 cylinder feul injection 2002 model . the van whilst traveling heats up heat guage light on cuts off restards when cool again also experiencing problems where gears are difficult particularly gears 1& 2 please help me thank you valli
