1984 Vanagon 1.9
244500 miles engine overhauled approximately 12000 miles ago.
engines runs rich, averages 13.5 to 16 mpg.
replaced engine temp sensor, disconnected engine idle regulator, fuel regulator is good. Set timing at TDC
engine performance seems okay (I am the original owner) but the gas consumption is killing me. I use to get 19-23 mpg.
please help me save our enviroment.
Thank You

I had the same problem. Changed the fuel pump solved the problem.
Because a weak fuel pump did not have enough pressure to SPREY ( turns the gas into fine mist) the gas into the cylinders.
And spark plugs cannot fully ignite gas droplets.
Before you go out to buy a fuel pump, Check that the fuel pressure is below 29psi with fuel regulator hose connected and below 36psi with hose disconnected.
A below reading indicate a weak fuel pump.
With the hi mileage on your car. I think it is time for the fuel pump to go weak ( bearings worn ).

The same symptom occures when I drove 100 miles. Stops at a Rest Stop. And the car won't start. The fuel pump was tired after turning for 100 miles.
