If a car battery is not being re-charged by the alternator, do you have a limited amount of driving time? i.e. Does the car need a working alternator to be able to drive around, or only to start it?

If the alternator/generator does not charge the battery, then it will only be a matter of time before it won't run anymore. To say it another way, yes there is a limited amount of time.
