Computer problem

We had a mechanic stop by to look at our Vanagon (California emissions) since it hasn't been running and he said that the electrical looked good, but we needed a new fuel pump. We replaced the fuel pump (as well as the coil, wires, spark plugs, hoses and fuel filter) and still it won't start. Now he thinks it's the computer. We have a plethora of Vanagons here on the island but none in the same year as ours, are there any other comparable VW computers that we can pull to use in our car? Also, we're getting a spark from the coil but not from the spark plugs, could we be losing power at the distributor or is that indicative of another problem?
