i have a 1974 type 1, model 111 beetle. i recently replaced the alternator, and got everything hooked back up. the battery was dead of course from the alternator being bad. so when i hook up jumper cables to it, the positive and negative wires at the alternator get really hot and the alternator smokes.....please help.

it's possible you have the wires to the alt. reversed.
make triple sure...
also, check your voltage regulator...it's under the rear seat on the driver's side.
make sure the belt isn't too tight
