I'm having a problem with my vw, go figure, it doesn't shift into first or third. However it does shift into second, fourth, and reverse. And I was hoping somone could enlighten me if you know whats wrong. I know it's either the clutch or something in the transmission. And if you don't know telling me how to take the engine off will do quite nicely.

To remove the engine, remove the shroud and loosen up the 4 bolts that hold the engine in, do not remove yet. Disconnect the electrical wiring. Make sure you label each wire. Loosen up the heater exchangers then jack the vw up. Use a floor jack and position it in the center of the engine. Jack it up enough to keep enough pressure so the engine is stable. Remove the bolts holding the engine in. You will have to wiggle the engine some and move it back so it clears the bell housing. Then you can lower the engine on the jack. You may have to jack the car up some more so it will be able to clear the rear of the car. Onece cleared then remove the engine pulling it back.
