2007 Volkswagen Jetta Gas tank/Filling with gas

2007 Volkswagen Jetta V8 Wheel Drive Type unknown Automatic 12000 miles

This morning I was putting gas into my car and about at a gallon it started overflowing. I was already pumping the gas slow, so I'm not real sure what happened. It was completely out of gas, so I know it was empty. What could be the reason it did that?

The fault could lie within the gas station pump. They are suppose to shut off at a certain pre determined point[pressure].
