the temp light is on and the car has beeped 3 times. Do I simply need more water or is it safe to drive 8 miles to the dealer.

Check your coolant level, first off. If the level is good, then start driving but keep an eye on your temp gauge. If it goes more than 3/4, pull over and turn the engine off. Let is cool down.
