Engine Cooling problem

of first of all the check coolant light came one and i check the coolant and it way low. so i bought some and keep it full so it wouldnt run hot. well when i was driving home from work the car started smoking from under the hood. white smoke. i just wanted to get and opionion of whats wrong.
