Engine Mechanical problem
1999 Volkswagen Jetta 4 cyl Automatic 88400 miles

99 Jetta shuts off after driving for 10-15 minutes or as soon as it is on the highway with a speed of more than 60 miles (I am not sure which one is the problem, because it runs smoothly in the city traffic).A forcing sound comes from the transmission, the car starts to decelerate immediately followed by check engine light and battery light on.I was towed twice from the highway due to this problem. A mechanic replaced the mass air flow sensor and the main vacuum line and it happened again after that. He couldn't find any problems. Now I took it to another mechanic, he cleaned the throttle body and now he says I should change the fuel pump and asks for $550! Do you think replacing the fuel pump will fix the problem? Please help me.

Before I would replace the fuel pump I would replace the fuel filter and check the fuel pressure, your problem on the freeway I don't think it's fuel related because fuel related problems do not set in engine light, I believe the lockup torque converter may not be working properly, around town driving you don't get up to speeds for the torque converter to lock in, the torque converter lock in about 55 miles an hour, I would take it to the transmission shop and have them download the codes they should do that for free
