Electrical problem
1998 Volkswagen Jetta 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic

All of the gauges on my instrument cluster suddenly stopped working after performing a jump on the car. The tachometer was pegged just below 1,000 rpm and the speedometer was stuck at about 20 mph. The gas gauge indicated one-quarter tank of gasoline but before the jump, it registered three-quarters of gasoline. The low oil indicator was also lit. All of these problems were non-existent prior to the jump. What could have caused this problem?

Probably didn't like the voltage spike.

Disconnect both battery cables and join them together for 1/2 hour. Reconnect and all may be OK.

The instrument clusters are problematic however and there have been issues with bad solder joints.
