1997 Volkswagen Jetta 4 cyl Automatic 177000 miles

I'm looking to buy a 97 Volkswagen Jetta GLS. I plan to get the crafax and inspection before buying, ofcourse, but I'm just looking for any and all opinions. I've never been much of a car girl, but I'm about to have a baby and NEED to do this right. I'm nervous because it's got high mileage for an automatic. I've never known anyone who's owned a Volkswagen anything so I'm just lookin for opinions, problems they are known to have, the goods, the bads, the horribles, ect!
THANKS!

They get good MPG, are expensive to repair and often need it, they rate average on safety. If you have no records of service for the vehicle, there are a lot of things that may need replaced that will pop up on you after purchasing. My opinion, and this is only my opinion because others would disagree, they are not my favorite. They require much maintenance and are difficult to work with. However, if properly taken care of, they can be fine.

Let me know if you have specifics.
