1996 Volkswagen Jetta hard starting

My Jetta is not firing while cranking the starter. when I turn loose of the the key to the run position it will fire the plugs if the engine is still rolling. I can start it if I keep doing this, but is very had to start.There should be something that maintains power to the inginistion while cranking the engine
