1996 Volkswagen Jetta Two Wheel Drive Manual

Ok my my 1996 jetta starting making this noise today.

A loud ping/hammering noise comes from the handbrake. The faster I go the faster the noise becomes. If I put my hand on the handbrake I can feel a vibration everytime it makes a noise.

What could it be???

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Best bet would be a visual inspection of the rear barkes/e-brake and see if something has broken, sounds like that may be what happened.i would do this soon, it could possibly jam itself and cause a problem like wheel lock-up
