My 96 jetta will start and the engine runs really rough at idle as soon as any throttle is applied it will stall out immediantly. When it broke down I replaced the coil pack and was able to drive it home but could smell the catalytic converter (smells like rotten eggs). The next day I tried to start it and had almost the same symtoms as before I replaced the coil but engine is running even worse and dies seconds after starting it.

Test for injector pulse using a small bulb called a noid light. If none found, check for power supply at one side of the injector with the key on.

Use a fuel pressure gauge to test for correct fuel pressure, also noticing if the pressure holds when key is shut off.
