2004 Volkswagen GTI engine revs when in gear

when i first start the car and take off when i give it gas the engine revs with car in drive. after a few seconds it takes ahold and takes off and doesn't do that again until engine is cold.

Unfortunately it is a common problem on automatic VWs.
Sometimes it is caused by low or dirty transmission fluid. Take it to a shop that knows VWs and has the proper equipment to check and/or change the fluid.
