2002 Volkswagen GTI trunk hatch

My hatch on the car will not open, a key will not open it and niether will the electronic button on the door. I was wondering if this has ever happened to anyone else or just my luck?

Is there an emergeny handle on the inside of the trunk that you can access? If not then you can try and remove trim panels from inside of vehicle it is a pain but its the only way to access the latch and manually release.
