My 2003 Golf is having a problem with overheating. I am able to drive the vehicle around town for extended periods of time at speeds under 70 mph with no problem. However, when i drive on the freeway at higher speeds in fifth gear the vehicle will overheat. But when i slow down to about 50 mph the temperature drops back to a perfect level.

Also, the heat doesnt work anymore either. There are no leaks and the coolant level is at a perfect level. Is this a thermostat issue, waterpump, or something else? Thank you!

Sounds like the cooling system is not flowing properly. A sticking thermostat or broken water pump could be the cause.

I would suggest replacing the thermostat and checking the water pump impeller at the same time.

Once the thermostat is removed you should be able to reach your fingers to the water pump impeller. If there is any movement or signs of cracking, the pump should be replaced (along with the timing belt and tensioner).
