2002 Volkswagen Golf speedometer

hi,

I have a golf 2002 and the speedometer is going all over the place. When I am doing 100KM it shows at 120KM after a while driving then it will go from 120 down to 0KM but it does not effect my driving what could the problem be and if it is the sencor where abouts is this underneath the car?

My locator doesnt say where the VSS (vehicle speed sensor) is for a manual, for an auto it is on top of he trans near the cooler.But it does sound like the VSS is the problem
