Engine Performance problem
2001 Volkswagen Golf 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

Hi there the VW I have has a crazy problem I cant put my finger on to repair it. What happens is when fuel get low the car will surge while driving and will stall at an intersection and not pull power when going up a steep hill. When the tank is full it goes fine. When you start the car you must get the engine going on first fire however if you dont catch it on first fire the engine will keep turning over and flood. Its almost like it's over metering the fuel but the above mentioned problem rules that out.

Any ideas would be appreciated

Being that the fault is directly related to the fuel level, have the fuel pump/fuel pressure checked.

I have seen broken fuel lines inside the tank suck in air causing similar problems. The pump may need to be removed for closer inspection.
