Engine Mechanical problem
1997 Volkswagen Golf Manual 138000 miles

I was hoping if you could tell me if my engine is protected from my timing belt if it breaks? I am not sure of the proper way to word it, but I know some are encased so if they break it wont destroy the engine.
I do plan to change it, do not have the records of it being changed in the past and would like to save the money to get it done. Just put new tires, breaks and rotors on it. I bought it used, it runs great.
