i recently asked why I suddenly had only 2 inch play with the clutch peddle and was answered, check hydraulics master cylinder and rubber boots may be leaking, but it aint hydraulic its got a clutch cable

These Golfs have adjustable clutch cables that adjust to the correct free play as the clutch wears.
However, they are prone to stretching and the rachet system in the cable stops working. The free play does not get adjusted properly as a result and you then start to get play on the clutch pedal.

At the milage you have put the vehicle at ( 140k ), I would say you may need a new clutch cable.
