Hello, I have a 1992 VW Golf GL Auto Trans. I think I need to replace my starter because sometimes when you turn the ignition to start, it just whines because the pinion doesn't make contact with the flywheel. Is this a hard job? Thanks.

Hi there,

The book time is just on 2 hrs to R & R the starter so there must be a bit involved, this may be a job for your mechanic I would get a quote first.

Thanks for that answer but I have already spoke to a couple of mechanics and they told me the same thing so I already know this. What I don't know is what is involved that takes 2 hours to replace a starter that mounts to the block with only 2 bolts and wires attached.

Hi there,

going by the times guide it must be an access issue as the manual trans version take much less time, I have not done one my self so I am unsure, I will contact a few other mods and see if anyone has done one, as I will be away for a few days I will place the request now, so I hope that you will get an answer soon,

Hi there,

from what I have discovered, on autos you have to remove an engine mount and support the engine with a special tool, this will be the extra time factor involved. I hope this helps.

Thanks a lot for your answer. It sounds logical. The best thing for me to do is to get under the car and check it out. Then make a decision whether to do it myself or to contract it out. I already purchased the starter. Your efforts are greatly appreciated.
