1993 Volkswagen Eurovan Automatic Shift Lock - Park to Driv

After depressing the brake, I cannot move the gearshift from Park into Drive. The car is running and ready to go, but I cannot depress the button on the gearshift (automatic transmission) to move it from Park into Drive. Is there a lever or cable that goes from the brake pedal to the gearshift that allows the gearshift to move once the pedal is depressed?
