1976 Volkswagen Eurovan fuel gauge needle on dash does not

the fuel guage on 76 volks westy van quite working about a week ago took apart dash seems to be getting power to the terminal of gauge I could not figure out how to get to the float ? in the tank or terminal on outside of tank to chk. for power there how do I access this area or do you have any other possible fixes thank you hayeszer
