2000 Volkswagen Beetle Grinding noise when starting

My Beetle makes a strange grinding noise when starting (almost sounds like it would if clutch were not engaged, except it is). It does not happen everytime but probable 50-75% of the time.

Starter pinion gear faulty time to replace starter also check flywheel teeth for damage.
