Transmission problem
1974 Volkswagen Beetle 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Manual

Do I have a problem with my clutch or transmission? When trying to back up, I have to "ride the clutch" to keep the car from bucking and stalling. Going forward is fine. I have no problem shifting into any gear. Just doesn't want to go backwards.

I would be looking at the brakes, as if the clutch was worn, you would get the problem in forward as well, i am not dismissing a transmission problem but a trans will normally not show these characteristic if it is faulty, a broken brake spring can cause the brakes to grab in reverse under some circumstances.
