Hi All - In VW's when it does well on fuel, the end of exhaust pipe gets grey in color, but resently I noticed it does not happen even after a long trip.

As at now car pulls well, and gives good mileage as well.
I feel the car should do better on fuel if I can look in to this area, with a better Carb: Tunning. I am not qualified mechanic, but still I do a good job where my car is concern.

Pls advice what I should do.

A tune up consist of a few things. Mostly general maintance, like air tire pressure. Oil and filter change. Spark plug wires if you find any that are getting brittle. Fuel filter replaced. Spark plug checked and replaced if necessary spark plug gap 0.024 to 0.026, dwell angle is from 44 to 50 BTDC. Timing, on vw's with manual transmission from 1970 to 1973 with carburator or fuel injuected is 5 degrees ATDC after top dead center check the drivebelt it should have about a 1/2 inch deflection. Use a little spray on lube other moveable connections such as the connection from the cable to the carb. This way it keeps it free from dinding up.
