Transmission problem
1970 Volkswagen Beetle 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive 165000 miles

My 1970 VW bug (just bought it a week ago) will not shift while running. It also will not start in gear. I can start car in neutral, and it will shift while the car is not running. I think it may be the clutch isn't disengaging the transmission but not sure. Can you help.

Sure sounds like the clutch is worn out.If you try to start it in gear,with the clutch in does the car lurch forward? If so the clutch needs replacing
