I have a 69 Volkswagen Bug. It starts great when engine is cold but when you drive it a little and shut off the engine you have to crank the starter quite a bit to get the engine to fire and start. A new carb was installed when the engine was rebuilt just 3400 miles ago.

start off by checking the lines making sure they are tight. Then check to see when they put the new carb on that the lines are clear of any heat source. If the line is close it can make the fuel vapor. What we used to call vapor locked.

incorrectly set point dwell or timing can cause hard starting, too, especially if the timing isn't advanced about 7 degrees.
