I just bought a 65 VW bug. While driving it home it began to smoke. I pulled off at the nearest exit and it died on the off ramp. I pushed it 1/4 mile to at dealership where it now sits. A guy who helped me (says he used to work at a VW shop) push it says that a new drain plug and some oil and it should be fine, but I'm a little worried. Could my motor be completely ruined since it shut off?

Hi there,

I would not hold out much hope, but it is wort the price of the oil to replace the plug and oil and run it up, check the oil pressure and listen for any knocking noises, it wont take long to destroy an engine with no oil.

I put a new plug and some oil in and it started right back up. It still runs like a champ.

Hi there,

That is great news, just keep a close ear to the engine noise just in case. But you may be safe if it is working all OK.
