I think you are referring to the plastic splash cover. That isn't it (nothing ever seems to be that simple). The carrier is a steel bracket that runs under the engine. It requires the removal of the front axle, the engine is raised and supported, and so on.
The interesting thing is this. I've gone through the manual several times. According to the manual, the carrier needs to be removed. However, looking through the directions leads me to think it can be done without removal. If I am seeing things correctly, if you slightly lift the engine and support it, you should be able to remove the mounts. However, the manual does not indicate that.
Before you jump into the removal of the carrier, inspect and study the design. Determine if there is a way to replace the mounts without removing the carrier.
I attached the directions below for the removal and replacement of the carrier. Let me know your thoughts on this.
