Hi and thanks for using 2CarPros. Com.

If the engine is not running, it is normal for the battery light to be on because the battery is not being recharged.

I have a couple questions. When you turn the key to the start position, does the starter engage? Or, does the starter engage and turn the engine but it just does not start?

Let me know.

Joe

I believe it engages but just will not start. Sometimes it tries but bogs down then turns on anyway. And when we have been jumped it starts instantly. Once it is on it runs fine but it does not like starting.

Welcome back,

If it starts easily when being jump started, then either we have a weak battery or a bad connection. I need you to check two things. Also, I need to know if the battery light stays on when the engine is running.

The two links above require little knowledge and are simple to perform. Take a look and let me know what you find. If you need guidance or help in any way, let me know.

From the links it sounds like it may be the battery. The light does go off after the vehicle turns over. Ideally what battery output should we look for? And the car has a CD player in it that is after market. Our battery we just bought currently does 675 and 550 it says.

Hi again. Battery cold cranking amperage is based on the accessories and demands of the vehicle. A parts store that sells batteries will have the requirements.

Since the battery is new, try placing it on a charger for a couple hours. While it is charging, clean the battery terminals and confirm the ground from the battery to the block is clean, tight, and not corroded. Also, make sure the positive from the battery to the starter is also tight, clean, and not corroded.

I have a feeling it is a bad connection. Most likely, one of the battery terminals is not tightening. They can wear to a point that even though the bolt is tight, the terminal remains somewhat loose. Therefore, when you reinstall it, tighten it and see if you are able to move the terminal.

Let me know what you find. Also, since the battery is new, they should just exchange it at the parts store. You may want to remove it and take it in and allow them to load test it. If it is weak, they should replace it.

Take care,
Joe

I will have to see about that test, otherwise the cables seem fine tight wise. So we will try cleaning the connections. Like a few others we asked said maybe a fuse or relay could be the problem.

I will have to see about doing that Monday. So far I have noticed if I give it a little gas as I turn the key it rolls over like it is suppose to.

Hi again. I did not realize it started normally when you press the gas. Your vehicle has an throttle actuator control which helps the engine get air when you are not pressing on the gas pedal. Since it starts when you press on the pedal, I have a feeling the throttle body needs cleaned. Here are the directions for cleaning it.

________________________

Throttle Body Cleaning

Caution: Turn OFF the ignition before inserting fingers into the throttle bore. Unexpected movement of the throttle blade could cause personal injury.

Notice: Do not insert any tools into the throttle body bore in order to avoid damage to the throttle valve plate.

Notice: Do not use any solvent that contains Methyl Ethyl Ketone (MEK). This solvent may damage fuel system components.

1. Remove the air cleaner outlet duct.

Important: DO NOT prop open the throttle blade with the ignition key in the ON position as it may set a diagnostic trouble code (DTC).

2. Inspect the throttle body bore and the throttle valve plate for deposits. You must open the throttle valve in order to inspect all of the surfaces.
3. Clean the throttle body bore and the throttle valve plate using a clean shop towel with GM Top Engine Cleaner P/N 1052626 (Canadian P/N 993026) or AC-Delco Carburetor Tune-up Conditioner P/N X66-P, or an equivalent product.
4. Install the air cleaner outlet duct.
__________________________

I was able to find a couple pictures of the throttle blade. Just make sure not to do any of the work with the key on. Once you remove the air inlet tube, you will see the throttle blade. There is no need to remove the component as seen in picture 2.

Let me know if you have other questions or need help. Also, if you could, please let me know if this takes care of the problem.

Take care,
Joe

Alright had my friend mike clean out the throttle body as best we could. Also went to Naps and had the electric tested. They said its all good and their thinking alternator. It seems after the guy tested it and cleaned up the battery a little. It starts better I don't always have to give it gas now. But the battery symbol still comes up until the car is fully on.

Hi:
I have a feeling cleaning the throttle body did the trick. As far as the battery light, it will stay on until the engine is running for a couple seconds. That is normal.

Let me know if it continues running properly.

Take care,
Joe
