This sounds like a possible idle control issue, but we need to check what the check engine light is telling us. This means we need to check codes and go from there. We could guess at this but the fact that the check engine light is on is telling us the vehicle sees an issue and those codes will help us get on the right path.
If you can't pull the codes, most parts stores will do the scan for free or we will need to take it to a dealer or repair shop. Let me know what you find and we can go from there. Thanks
