When Im at a stop light or on the occasion driving down the road my car starts to lag and it tends to shut off. When that happens the service engine light comes on and when you leave it sitting for a while the light goes away and the lagging stops. But after the car warms up it starts to lag again. On occasion it shuts off but the lagging is constant after a couple miles. What is or could be the problem?

could it be the ignition coil?
