1999 Vauxhall Zafira Front Wheel Drive Manual 72000 miles

my zafira has been making a grinding noise coming from the drivers side for a llittle while then yesterday while I was driving the battery light came on and then it just cut out and wouldnt start. All the lights radio wipers etc still work and on checking the battery it has 12 volts with the lights off 10 volts with them on and when you try to turn the car on the volts go down to 2, could this be the alternater or something else please help
