Possibly a CV (constant velocity) joint and boot. Common in Vauxhall Corsa's and Vectra's.
When turning a corner the outside wheel should turn slightly faster than the inside wheel - in order to keep a reduced turning circle. When the CV joint splits, opr the CV boot loses lubricant, the wheels cannot turn at slightly different speeds, so there is an alarming knocking sound. Costs about  100 for a single part with boot and lubricant and fitting.
