1998 Vauxhall Corsa overheating?

i havent been driving long. ive had the car 5 months or so, today i noticed the gauge on the bottom left hand of the dashboard which shows a temperture, im guessing engine temp? it was raising to 100 degrees c and raising when engine running. this is worrying. what is the problem and what do i need to do?

first check the coolant level .. if this is ok .. have a repair centre inspect the coolant system with a pressure test and a cylnder compression test hope this helps
