2003 Vauxhall Combo altenator

my combo 1.7dti won't start the side lights are on though the switch is off, the alternator gets hot while battery is connected and smells of burning, once the battery is disconnected the alternator cools down.

start by replacing the alternator .. you may have a bad wiring short
