when driving my handbrake light will come on?

i have recently just starting to get a problem with my Vauxhall Astra, where when driving my handbrake light will come on and start beeping even though i havent touched the handbrake. a couple of people have told me it might mean my brake pads need changing and i was wondering if you could shed any light on the above problem.

Hello,

This issue is likely caused by the parking brake switch.
The switch is probably shorted out to the 'on' position and triggering the light on the dash.
It is located under the parking brake lever.
To access the switch you will have to remove the trims around the parking brake handle.

I have attached a diagram for a Saturn Ion, which is very similar to the Astra.
