I am driving along for about 2 miles and the engine just cuts out. The car will not restart for about ten minutes. The car is not steerable so I have to hope I am near the inside lane.

Hi there,

you should first check for any set fault codes. there may be an engine management issue and a code will help locate it. If no code, start checking for a faulty fuel pump or blocked filter, when it stops also see if it has lost spark, this will help also to diagnose the problem.
