Noises problem

hi there,
i have a 2003 vauxhall astra and recently travelled to aberdeen from london everything was fine going there and half way back, but towards home a very large rattling noise started coming from the engine so i pulled into a service station and topped the oil up but oil was nearly full the noise has gotten gradually worse now and have no clue to what it is
