Vehicle speed sensor (VSS) is usually located on the transmission. There is sesnors on the wheels (wheel speed sensors) used for the ABS?

The car may cut out because the speedo is not working, but it is not common ? the VSS tells the ECU/PCM when to shift gear and apply torque converter clutch, if the ECU/PCM is not getting correct signal you will also get harsh/late gear shift's .. did you have the vehicle plugged into a diagnostic scanner/computer to retrieve any fault codes stored ? when it cuts out, does it start again straight away ?

Let me know
