2002 Vauxhall Astra Engine heater dashboard gauge not worki

Have had car checked by garage. Sender and thermostat ok. They say it could be Electronic Control Unit but it is probably gauge. Are there any tests that I can carry out to determine which it is. OR could it be something simpler?

most probably the gauge or wiring is at fault ..
