Hi everybody, this is my first time on here, so please bear with me if I do things wrong.

I am considering buying a Astra Estate 1.7 DTI 16V with 95000 miles on Clock. It appears to be in reasonable condition, and the Engine sounds nice, but whilst I was looking under the Bonnet I noticed that there was Water constantly flowing through the Expansion Bottle. I ran it for approx. 15 minutes and the Temperature gauge hardly moved, less than 1/4 on gauge, although there was warm air coming out of the Blowers.

Is it normal to see water flowing through the Bottle?

I couldn't take it for a test drive today, but i'm going back later in the Week.

Any kind of feed back would be greatly appreciated.

BING.

Hello,

It is normal for coolant to flow back into the expansion bottle.

The return pipe, small pipe, will always feed coolant back to the expansion tank.
See picture below

The main cooling system is controlled by the thermostat which only opens at certain temperatures, this will then bring on the cooling, radiator, fan to cool the engine down.

It is quite normal for a diesel engine to take some time to reach operating temperature, especially when left to idle.

Please let us know how you get along.

Cheers, Boris
