Noise which seems to be coming from the engine when I accelerate?

i have used my car all day with no problems but tonight there is a real loud noise which seems to be coming from the engine when I accelerate I thought maybe the exhaust but after lifting the bonnet it seemed to becoming from the engine it is like a loud purring noise.

Sounds like it could be an exhaust leak?

It sounds like one of the spark plugs was loose and fell out, I would life the hood while the engine is running to see if you can tell where the noise is coming from. Here is a guide that may help as well
