1998 Vauxhall Astra 1.7 td astra engine turns over but wont

Hi, the engine turns over but will not fire up, and also there seem to be a grinding noise comming from the front off - side part of the engine; a friend surgested that its likely to be the fuel pump. is there any way I could test and or eleminate the fault before I start spending too much money on her please?

the fuel pmp is situated inside the tank on this vehicle ..I would be removing the timing belt cover and checking the belt and pulleys
