I want to buy a fairly used Hyundai Sonata, but they are saying the top gasket has been tampered with, so I want to know if I can go ahead and purchase and if de tampering with the top gasket won’t be a problem?

Hi,

Are you referring to the head gasket? If so, what are you seeing that indicates work has been done?

Also, be careful. I suspect this vehicle has a 2.4L 4-cylinder engine. There have been a number of issues related to it. Hyundai has actually extended the warranty on them. Also, in most cases, the engine failure is catastrophic, and the engine needs to be replaced.

I attached a pic below showing what has been going on with the 2.4L. Before you make a purchase, I recommend contacting a Hyundai dealership to first see if warranty work has been done, is the vehicle still under a powertrain warranty, and consider having them inspect the work.

Let me know.

Joe
