Following your vacuum down, with low side open at gauge and coupling. Yellow house attached to vacuum pump. When i run the pump, the gauge will only go to 6-inch hg. Any suggestions as to why i am not pull 29–30-inch hg. Thanks. I am a 78 old retired automotive engineer.

Sounds like you are working on the A/C. Unable to pull a vacuum would be a leak. What was the reason for pulling it down originally?

System worked until the compressor failed? I suspect you have tested the vac pump itself to be sure it can pull a vacuum? If you have access to CO2, dump some into it and use plain soapy water to check those parts for leaks. That way you don't need to start over. I would check over the cores as well, wouldn't be the first time I saw a core that was failing under vacuum but could hold pressure. If you wanted to you could also test by isolating the parts and pull them down as a test. You don't need to pull it all the way down then, just enough that you are sure the cores are not the problem.
